Washhouses and weavers: From the 17th until the end of the 19th century, the trade of hemp and the cottage weaving industry created considerable economic expansion that fostered the creation of Le Bourg-Neuf and the Creusot. As you stroll Le Bourg-Neuf to the cul de sac at the picturesque stone mill, you cannot help but notice the unique number of charming stone washhouses that were built, along with the houses, for the local weavers.
Just a stroll away: Join the 2400 residents of Fresnay exploring the Saturday market, grocery stores, bakery, patissier, chocolatier, florist, tabac, cafes, restaurants, taverns, housewares and hardware store, antiques shops, specialty shops, museum, performing arts center, cinema and tourist offices.
Gateway to the regional park Normandie-Maine: Located in the Alps Mancelles in the Pays de la Loire, just south of Normandy, this undiscovered riverside gem is the ideal home for exploring northwestern and central France. At Le Mans, which is less than 30 minutes to the south, board the TGV train and you will arrive in the center of Paris or Airport Charles de Gaulle in around an hour. Drive one-hour south from Le Mans to the Loire Valley and the wonderland of the Loire Chateaux. Picturesque Alencon is 15 minutes to the North. Mont St Michel is 90 minutes East of Alencon and the Normandy beaches are about 2 hours to the North. Fresnay sur Sarthe offers easy access to the channel ports of Caen (2hrs.), Cherborg (2hrs. 45 min.) and Le Harve (2hrs 30 mins.).
Recreational opportunities abound. Go for a swim in the local outdoor pool Le Sans Souci, play miniature golf, enjoy the skateboard park, sharpen your archery or tennis skills all in or near town. Trails and facilities for golfing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and bungee jumping are all within easy distance from town. If cars are your passion, you could even spend 24 hours in Le Mans. Explore the nearby villages of St-Leonard-des-Bois and St-Cenereri-le-Gerei that, along with Fresnay sur Sarthe, are considered the most beautiful sites in the Alpes Mancelles. Travel further to the châteaux, craftsman and troglodyte villages of the Loire Valley. Experience the tangy ciders and exceptional cheeses from the pastoral countryside of Normandy, the ethereal grandeur of Mont St Michel and the rugged beauty of Brittany beyond, the historical northern beaches, and the city of light, Paris.
